A Substantial Impact

Nonprofits are known for their good deeds and critical work in our communities. August 17 is National Nonprofit Day. Usually, I take this time of year to encourage nonprofit organizations across Mississippi to search for unclaimed money in their organization’s name – and I’m going to do the same this year.

Nonprofits provide critical services and impact our communities in many positive ways. What most people don’t know is that hundreds of thousands of dollars belonging to various nonprofits remain unclaimed in the State of Mississippi. Many of these organizations are unaware they are entitled to unclaimed money. This could include a forgotten bank account, uncashed checks, insurance proceeds, and more.

The Mississippi Treasury appreciates the valuable work and community service carried out by nonprofits throughout the state. Our unclaimed money team is constantly working to process claims, verify rightful owners, and eliminate fraud.

Finding and returning unclaimed money has been a focus of mine since day one as your State Treasurer. Since I became Treasurer, we have returned almost $200 million in unclaimed money, including funds to organizations like the Make-A-Wish Foundation. That is more money than all previous State Treasurers combined!

Now is the time, if you haven’t already, to search for unclaimed money, not only in your name, but also in the name of a nonprofit you support. To check, please visit treasury.ms.gov/search.

Unclaimed money is your money, not the government’s. Sometimes it simply gets misplaced or forgotten, but the impact of finding it can be substantial. For nonprofits, unclaimed money can help support programs, pay bills, expand outreach, and benefit communities across Mississippi.

Searching for unclaimed money takes just a minute, but finding lost funds can make a substantial difference in the life of an individual or the work of a nonprofit.
